On the 26th September 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) and TikTok, a platform for short-form mobile videos, announced a year-long collaboration aimed at providing people with reliable, science-based health information. This reflects WHO's commitment to leveraging multiple digital communication platforms to increase outreach to people globally, to promote health literacy, healthy behaviors and actions in an increasingly digitized world.

Social media sites can be valuable information sources that affect decisions and behaviors linked to health. Among the young adults, one in four actively searches for news information on social media sites like TikTok. We also know that on these digital channels, people are increasingly being targeted with false and malicious information.

The new partnership between TikTok and WHO aims to address these issues by fostering positive health conversations and evidence-based content.
This partnership may mark a turning point in the development of more socially conscious platforms. WHO Chief Scientist Dr. Jeremy Farrar stated, "The nexus of health and technology offers an opportunity to reach people of all ages, where they are, when they want to access.

" "We are assisting people in accessing reliable information and participating in scientific discourse that together helps shape a healthier future for all by collaborating with TikTok and others."

Encouraging enhanced health literacy via influencer participation

TikTok is using its platform and technology to expand access to reliable information and raise health awareness within its worldwide community of over 1 billion users. TikTok wants to improve people's wellbeing through dispelling stigmas, telling moving tales, offering aid to those in need, and creating strong communities.

We work hard to make sure millions of users can access trustworthy information on this significant subject since we are aware that they use TikTok every day to share and connect with others in all spheres of their lives, including their well-being. According to Valiant Richey, Global Head of Trust and Safety Outreach and Partnerships at TikTok, "We are excited to be working with the World Health Organization's Fides network of health influencers today to further strengthen this commitment by bringing authoritative and engaging content about mental well-being to our community."

Launched in 2020, the WHO's Fides network has been enlisting the help of health content makers to combat disinformation and promote content that is grounded in evidence. Fides can assist improve targeted, trustworthy communication to enable individuals obtain better health information. With a community of over 800 creators reaching 150 million people across numerous platforms, the platform can help achieve this goal.

"Creators who understand their audience's needs to have a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between science and everyday life," said Dr. Alain Labrique, WHO's Director of Digital Health and Innovation, emphasizing the significance of this effort. WHO can help influencers in this situation by providing evidence-based content, ensuring that health discussions on platforms like TikTok are meaningful and well-informed.

Through the agreement, activities pertaining to several pertinent health problems will be expanded. Science-based knowledge will be converted into accessible and easily digestible video content, and influencers will receive further support via TikTok's creator training programs.
